Soul Food Has a Ceiling
There's soul food. And then there's soul training. One nourishes you. The other builds you.
The world is loud. The pace is relentless. There’s a booming industry promising you relief, but real peace isn’t something you can buy.
Retreats. Apps. Breathwork weekends. The perfectly optimized morning routine. Marketers will sell you the promise that you can buy your way into a so-called effortless existence.
We all know that person. The one who seems to move through life calm, lit up, like she got handed a secret the rest of us missed. The wellness industry points at her and says, “Buy this, and you’ll feel like that.”
Here’s what I’ve learned after two decades in this work: she has something that was never for sale. What she has is trained.
A confession
Years ago, I’d sit down to make business decisions and feel like I might jump out of my skin if I sat at my desk any longer. I was overloaded, stressed and couldn’t hear my own clarity.
So I reached for soul food. The long run. The offsite. The walk in nature. The trip I took from my bucket list. The cup of espresso that felt like magic or the lunch with friends that embraced me no matter how I showed up. It would fill my heart and soul, give me a boost of confidence, and, as an early founder at that time, I needed it.
However, a week later, I’d be back at my desk circling the same decision, carrying the same overload. This was me 15 years ago: spiritual but not strategic.
What it costs you when the soul stays quiet
Here’s why this matters beyond a nice feeling.
When your soul is fed yet unactivated, the pattern looks like this:
You circle the same decision for months. It costs you money, time, and brain space, and you call it “being thorough.”
You lead from a nervous system that has been white-knuckling for years, and you call it “being driven.”
You visit peace, twenty minutes on a Sunday morning, three days on a retreat, and then you hand it back at the door, and you call that “balance.”
And in a moment when everyone is talking about AI and staying connected to your authentic self, most of the conversation stops at the question of why it matters. Here at Bold Arrival, we teach and train you how to get there, how to stay there, and how to become relentless about creating from there.
Soul food, defined
First, we must honor the real power in soul food.
Long bike rides. Walks in nature. Travel. Breathwork. A slow lunch with the friends who embrace you no matter how you show up. The endorphins after a workout. The dopamine from a fabulous cup of espresso. The stuff that fills your heart, makes you feel alive again, and lets you feel the subtle energy that is you.
Truly, your soul gets hungry. This is real nourishment. Keep it. Use it.
And, my sweet way-finders, soul food has a ceiling. It fills you in the moment. It puts you in touch with your best self in the moment. It leaves the deeper reserve untouched: the one you draw on when things are challenging, and the long bike ride is unavailable.
Soul food feeds who you are now.
For who you’re becoming, you go one level deeper. Train for that level.
Soul training, defined
Soul training is how you activate your soul’s consciousness, which has been quietly waiting for your awareness, so you can co-create from this level of development.
Where soul food fills the heart, soul training directs it. On purpose. At your healing. At your resistance. At the decision you’ve been circling for months. It’s the force that disrupts what’s holding you back and the love required to go through anything and emerge wiser than before.
And unlike a good meal, training lasts. That’s the payoff: longevity. A durable home base of peace, calm, clarity, understanding, and kindness toward yourself and the people around you. You stop visiting that state. You start living there.
While there are four steps in soul training, it’s important for today to know that step one is to feed the soul. Fill the soul. This is where soul food comes in; it’s the on-ramp, and it matters.
Most people live here throughout their entire entrepreneurial journey and wonder why the peace keeps wearing off, why success constantly feels out of reach, or why leadership just isn’t landing with their team.
So what does it look like when leading?
The leaders who truly have this keep showing up to the room the same way every time. What changes is what becomes possible for everyone else in the room.
It signals they’re connecting to people beyond who they are today, straight to the potential they carry. When you meet someone, or a whole team, from that more refined place, they feel it even when they can’t name it. Their hearts, minds, and souls pick up the frequency, and that’s what shifts the outcome: motivation, creativity, problem-solving, and wisdom.
Moving a room is simple. It’s a choice about how you decide to meet yourself first and then others.
It’s a skill. And it can be trained.
What about you? How do you move beyond soul food and into soul training?
With a ton of love,
Heather

I love this so much as it deeply resonates with me. I am contemplating all that is in this message as I am stepping into my new role and navigating changes in life with teenage boys nearing going away to college.
